About the program

This literacy program is an 8-week reading program for children and youth 6- 12 years old who struggle with the attainment of early literacy skills due to an identified or suspected learning disability. Through this effective instructional program, children are paired with a trained tutor who will develop hands-on activities and games to teach the essential literacy concepts of phonics, sight words, and fluency, while building children’s motivation and fostering self-regulation. Each week, each student will work with their tutor to set goals and graph their success in these areas so they have a clear vision of their achievements. This numeracy program is designed to help children in grades 1-10 gain confidence and shift their mindset towards mathematics so that they can achieve academic success. Our trained professionals undergo additional training so they can provide a multi-sensory approach to teaching mathematics and focus on the fundamentals of mathematics: number sense and numeration, patterning and algebra and mathematical application. Building these fundamentals allows us to support any gaps and needs of each child. This program assists in the development of social skills and social problem-solving strategies while also promoting self-esteem and self-advocacy in a supportive environment. The aim of the program is to encourage friendship, positive social/emotional behaviours, active listening, effective communication, and understanding of social norms, among many other social skills. Formally known as SOAR, this 10 week program focuses on the basics of learning and Learning Disabilities, provides an opportunity for personal skill development, and prepares students for their upcoming transition into high school.

Designed specifically for students in grades 7 – 9 as they begin preparing and adapting to the choices and challenges of high school – building self-awareness, how to develop strong learning skills and work habits, and become a self-advocate in the learning process.
