The Sherwood Saints beat the Westdale Warriors 3-2 in Girls Development Hockey.

HAMILTON (April 5, 2018) – Mackenzie York from the Sherwood Saints netted the game winner on an end-to-end rush to lead the Saints past the Westdale Warriors 3-2 in the gold medal game of the HWDSB girls developmental hockey tournament held Thursday at Chedoke Twin Pad Arena.

With the score deadlocked at 2-2 and the game final minutes ticking away, York picked up the puck deep in her own zone and raced down the ice to earn Sherwood the tournament victory. The Saints finish the event undefeated, going 4-0 in round robin play and then adding a semi-final victory over the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs (3-1) before knocking off Westdale in the final.

Chloe McMurray and Breahna Bodo both scored for the Saints in the win with all of Sherwood’s goals coming without assists.

Westdale had their chances in the game and even held 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. After losing the lead with three minutes to play, they had several chances including the final minute with their goalie pulled; their attack however fell short.

The Warriors’ Sarah Cushnie picked up two points on a goal and an assist in the tournament finale, while Maya Clapperton added the other goal in the loss.

The Warriors road to the final was a bit different than Sherwood Westdale finished round robin play with a 1-1-2 record to place third. They then beat Sir Allan MacNab 5-4 in a thriller to qualify for the gold medal game.

This is the second year of the Girls Development Hockey Tournament format which caps the HWDSB Athletics hockey season for the school year. The tournament was contested over three days with Round Robin play taking place on March 29 and April 3rd. The semifinals and finals were played today (April 5).
