Take Your Kid to Work Day – November 6th
Background
Take Our Kids to Work is Canada’s most recognized career exploration event, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. For more than 25 years Grade 9 students across Canada have participated in Take Our Kids to Work Day exploring potential careers.
Information
November 6th is an opportunity to engage all students in considering their post-secondary aspirations and allow them to make connections with the programming in the school and within the HWDSB offered that lead to various post-graduation destinations.
The goals of the K-12 education and career/life planning are to:
• ensure that all students develop the knowledge and skills they need to make
• informed education and career/life choices;
• provide classroom and school-wide opportunities for this learning; and
• engage parents and the broader community in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program, to support students in their learning. (Ministry of Education, 2019)
There are many opportunities within the grade 9 program to allow students to explore education and career/life planning using the framework to ground the work (Ministry of Education, 2019).
Action:
Grade 9 students are welcome to participate in an observational one-day job shadowing experience at the workplace of a family member, friend, or other trusted adult. Schools are also encouraged to intentionally take the time to engage all Grade 9 students in learning related to careers and pathways.
