A Look Back: Boys Basketball

Senior Boys Basketball: History for Bernie Custis

In their inaugural season, the Bernie Custis Tigers made history, earning the HWIAC senior boys basketball title upsetting perennial powerhouse Saltfleet to advance to SOSSA and ultimately qualify for the OFSAA Boys AAA Basketball Championship.

The Tigers were a force all season long and earned a three-way tiebreak over Sir Allan MacNab and Saltfleet for the top seed entering the playoffs.  Bernie Custis, Sir Allan MacNab and Saltfleet all finished with 7-2 records.    In the playoffs, Bernie Custis were able to defeat Ancaster 74-53 while Saltfleet up ended Sir Allan MacNab with a 64-52 victory.  That set up for an exchanging of power in HWIAC senior boys basketball with the Tigers earning a 39-36 defensive battle against Saltfleet back on February 20th, 2020.  From there the Tigers would go on to win SOSSA and represent HWDSB at the OFSAA Boys AAA Basketball Championship in Burlington, Ont.

In the Division-II senior final, Westmount took home that crown earning a 54-44 victory over Dundas Valley.

In junior basketball, the No. 6 seeded Glendale Bears played cinderella in the playoffs to win the HWIAC title their first since the 1990-1991 season.   They defeated Orchard Park 63-47 in front of a their home fans to capture the championship crown.  Prior to the final, Glendale mustered upsets against No. 3 Westdale (70-46) in the quarterfinals then pulled off the unthinkable against defending champion and No. 1 seed Saltfleet (57-42) in the semifinal.

In the Division-II junior championship  Guido de Bres edged Georges-P-Vanier 62-57 in an overtime thriller.    Vanier was the top seeded team hosting a 5-5 record while Guido was ranked second with a 4-6 record.
