A Look Back: Girls Volleyball (2019-20)

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board celebrates the 2019-20 season with a look back at the year that was and honours this year’s most valuable players.

Girls Volleyball: Dundas Valley captures first ever city championship

The Dundas Valley Gryphons advanced to the Senior Girls ‘AA’ OFSAA Championship winning SOSSA and their first ever HWIAC city championship topping the Ancaster Royals who were the top ranked seed in league play.  The Gryphons ranked as the third seed with a 7-2 record entering the playoffs with Ancaster holding the No. 1 seed while Westdale was ranked No. 2.

Dundas secured playoff victories over Hamilton District Christian and Westdale before setting up the championship final on February 20th, 2020.  The Gryphons topped the Royals with set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-22 to raise the city championship banner. At OFSAA, the Gryphons earned a quarterfinal berth and finished as fifth best in the province.

Bernie Custis also captured an HWIAC championship  fended off a strong Sir Allan MacNab to take the Tier-II senior girls title.  The Tigers needed all five sets to knock off the Lions with set scores of 25-5, 20-25, 23-25, 25-13 and 17-15.

In junior girls volleyball, Ancaster recorded a perfect 7-0 season to earn top seed and propel themselves to the junior city title.  They would go on to knock off Guido de Bres, Waterdown and then Westmount 3-1 in the championship final.  Set scores in favour of the Royals were 10-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.
