A Look Back 2019-20: HWIAC Boys Volleyball

Boys Volleyball: Ancaster earns gold at city championship

The Ancaster Royals earned both the senior and junior boys HWIAC volleyball titles on November 12, 2019 edging Hamilton District Christian in both games.

The senior final was a heavyweight battle with Ancaster narrowly edging Hamilton DCH for the city championship. The match was a back and forth affair with the schools splitting the first four sets with Ancaster taking the deciding set. Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 in favour of the Royals which gave them their third straight HWIAC senior boys volleyball title.  In tier II boys, Sir Winston Churchill was able to capture that crown knocking off Orchard Park in straight sets (3-0).  Churchill finished with a 9-1 record and ran the table in the playoffs meeting the Patriots who had handed the Bulldogs their only loss of the season.  OP and Churchill split the season series 1-1.

The junior event saw the Royals sweep the Knights with set scores of 25-10, 25-23, 25-23. The win marked the Royals’ third championship in four seasons.

Both Ancaster squads were the best in the city entering the championship game. The senior side had amassed a 7-0 regular season record. Not to be outdone the junior squad tallied a 9-0 regular season record. Both teams moved through the playoffs as the top seed.

Bernie Custis collected and impressive 3-0 win over Churchill in the junior boys Tier-II championship to collect the school’s first ever HWIAC  title.   (they would go on to pick up a girls basketball division-II title a day later). The Tigers scored set wins of 25-23, 25-22 and 28-26 to close out the game.  In the regular season they put together a 7-1 record losing just 3 sets all year long.
