A Look Back: HWIAC Girls Basketball

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board celebrates the 2019-20 season with a look back at the year that was and honours this year’s most valuable players.

Girls Basketball: Westdale heads back to OFSAA

The Westdale Warriors captured the Senior Girls Basketball Championship knocking off Saltfleet 65-52 in front of a home crowd on November 12, 2019. That win propelled the Warriors to a victory at SOSSA and a berth into the Girls AAA OFSAA Championship. At OFSAA Westdale entered as the defending champions, but came up short finishing with a 2-1 record. Their only belmeish was a loss in the championship quarterfinal losing to Richview CI (Toronto) 64-57.

Bernie Custis was able to capture the school’s first ever girls title in their inaugural season capturing the Senior Girls Division-II championship against Sir Winston Churchill.  The Tigers earned the title on a 41-37 win and compiled a 6-2 regular season record earning the No. 1 seed heading into the playoff rounds.

In the junior girls basketball the Saltfleet Storm edged out Orchard Park with a 47-38 victory. Saltfleet was ranked as the third seed heading into playoffs finishing with a 5-2 record behind Ancaster and Orchard Park. In the playoffs, Saltfleet defeated Hamilton DCH 34-23 (quarterfinals) then knocked off Ancaster with a convincing 54-40 semifinal victory setting up the HWIAC junior championship match against Orchard Park.

In the junior girls Division-II league, Sir Allan MacNab earned an 8-0 regular season contending against Bernie Custis in the championship final.  MacNab clinched their perfect season with a 34-21 victory over the Tigers.

For the third year in a row, Glendale Secondary hosted the Girls’ All-Star Game which featured athletes from McMaster and Mohawk coaching a squad of the city’s best public school All-Star players. This year’s event also included a junior event which was the first time HWDSB has held a junior game.
