Churchill earns division-II football crown
HAMILTON (November 2, 2017) – The Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs held on to claim their first football title since the 1992-93 season edging the Glendale Bears 13-8 in the HWIAC division-II football championship on Thursday at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary.
The Bulldogs would build a 13-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter with two field goals coming from kicker Derek Flemming. Quarterback Owen Hinsberger would also find Joey Crouse for a short touchdown pass, with Flemming adding the convert to round out their scoring in the third quarter.
Glendale would try to mount a fourth-quarter comeback, getting on the board with just over nine minutes to play. Bears quarterback Ed Rolfe connected with Vince Patammoundy for a 30-yard strike to put the score at 6-0 and adding a safety minutes later.
Glendale would have two more opportunities to come out on top but would turn the ball over on downs with less than a minute to play to seal the victory for Sir Winston Churchill.
Churchill was the third-ranked team in Division-II football this season with a 4-2 record while Glendale ran the table on the league up until the final registering a 6-0 record.
Churchill’s last title came back in 1992-93 when they claimed a Division-III crown besting Sir John A. Macdonald 42-8. Their last appearance in a championship game was back in 2011-12 when theywere defeated by the now-closed Highland Secondary School.
In other HWDSB football action, the No. 1 ranked Sir Allan MacNab bested Saltfleet 43-7 to punch their ticket to the Division-I championship. Likewise, the Westmount Wildcats topped Westdale 39-0 to advance. The two teams will battle for the Division-I championship next Thursday (Nov. 9) at McMaster University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
