Four schools capture HWDSB elementary boys volleyball titles

2016-17 Boys Elementary Volleyball ChampionshipHamilton (December 14, 2016) – The 2016-17 elementary volleyball season concluded last night as HWDSB Athletics held the boys volleyball championship at Westdale and Ancaster High School.

In the senior division the Ancaster Senior Scorpions took the ‘AA’ division while the Janet Lee Jaguars secured the ‘A’ title. For the juniors, the R.A. Riddell Renegades captured the ‘AA’ division and  the Ryerson Rams earned the ‘A’ title.

Ancaster Senior Public Scorpions nabbed the ‘AA’ division title defeating the Flamborough Centre Falcons 3-1. The Scorpions took the first set of the evening 25-21, while Flamborough tied the match with an 11-25 second set win.  The Scorpions rebounded to take the next two sets 25-20, 25-14 to earn the championship.

The senior ‘A’ division final saw the Janet Lee Jaguars win 3-1 over Dr. J. Edgar Davey. In a tightly contested battle, the two teams traded sets 25-23, 23-25 with Jaguars claiming the final two sets 25-23 and 25-13.

R.A. Riddell swept away Sir William Osler 3-0 in the junior ‘AA championship’ with set scores being 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20.

In the junior boys ‘A’ championship the Ryerson Royals knocked off George L. Armstrong 3-2 in a five set thriller.  Ryerson notched the first set 25-18 but then lost their next two 10-25 and 17-25.  With their backs against the wall and in a must win situation they rebounded with a 25-21 fourth set and took the game earning a 15-11 in the deciding fifth set.

Ryerson and R.A. Riddell walked away with two titles apiece between the boys and girl championships held this week.  The Royals also claimed the senior ‘A’ girls championship on Monday while Riddell grabbed the junior ‘AA’ girls title.

Basketball is next up for the elementary sports with the boys and girls senior season kicking off after the holiday break in January.
