Waterdown, Dundas Valley capture Division-I girls basketball crowns

2016-17 Division-I Senior Girls Champions: Waterdown WarriorsHAMILTON (November 10, 2016) – The Waterdown Warriors earned their first ever senior girls basketball championship on Thursday defeating the Saltfleet Storm 52-41 at Mohawk College.

Waterdown held a slim 19-18 advantage at halftime but exploded for 33 second half points to secure the senior girls division-I championship.

Heading into the game, Saltfleet was the favorite ranked as the top seed and having previously defeated the Warriors 42-33 back on October 6th in their only regular season meeting.

For Waterdown, this year’s victory was a building block from last year’s defeat as the Warriors lost 48-34 to Westdale in the division-I championship in 2015-16.

Waterdown will now represent Hamilton (Zone 1) at SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association) which will be contested next Thursday (Nov. 17) at Notre Dame HS in Welland, Ont., They meet the Zone 4 champion in the SOSSA semifinal match which is set for a 11:00am tipoff. Other Hamilton schools advancing to SOSSA in the senior division include Hamilton District Christian (“A” level) and Delta Secondary (“AA” level).

2016-17 Division-I Junior Girls Basketball Champions: Dundas Valley GryphonsIn the junior division-I championship held prior to the senior game at Mohawk College, Dundas Valley capped a perfect season with a dominating 63-27 win over the Sherwood Saints.

It was the first time the Gryphons had captured a junior girls basketball title and like Waterdown they also rebounded from a championship loss last year (losing 32-24 vs. Saltfleet in 2015-16).

Dundas Valley finished a perfect 11-0 record including an unblemished 9-0 record in the regular season

Dundas Valley will represent Hamilton at the Junior “AA” SOSSA championship set for Waterdown on November 22.
