HWDSB student-athletes run into OFSAA

 

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. (Nov. 1, 2016) –  Hamilton area student-athletes have run themselves into a provincial championship as four teams and 12 individuals qualified for the provincial championship after posting top results at the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) cross country championship held last Thursday.

Ancaster’s Steve Bruun and Maddi Johnston took top position in the senior boys and senior girls races to lead the way.  Brunn was the top athlete running to a time of 23 minutes and 16.38 seconds.  He was just narrowly ahead of standout Dundas Valley athlete Alec Purnell who earned silver crossing in 23:34.46.

For the senior girls, Johnston crossed the line in 15: 50.43 seconds finishing a minute ahead of her nearest competitor.  Dundas Valley’s Fin Adams finished fourth in that same race while Guido de Bre’s Ashley Lof finished sixth.  All three are headed to OFSAA as individual qualifiers.

In the midget girls race, Sarah Cushnie was the silver medalist finishing the three kilometre race in 10:40.66.  Saltfleet’s Kerrit Shergill finished 4th qualifying for OFSAA as an individual.

Dundas Valley’s Allyson Sober picked up a silver medal in the girls junior race while Erin Anderson of Westdale was third.  Maddy Rule of Westmount finished in sixth.

Overall Dundas Valley, Guido de Bres, Hamilton District Christian High, Saltfleet and Westmount qualified athletes for the provincial championship while Dundas Valley picked of the overall girls SOSSA team title.
