OFSAA BOUND: Hamilton public schools head to provincial championships

HAMILTON (March 4, 2016) – Hamilton public schools are preparing for a shot at provincial glory next week with a number of local secondary schools slated to battle for OFSAA (Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association) titles from March 7-9 across the province.

In boys basketball, Sir Allan MacNab secondary enters the 18-team tournament as the 13th ranked team in the province vying for the highly coveted senior boys “AAA” championship which is hosted in Windsor, Ont. MacNab have a perfect 16-0 record heading into the provincial tournament after posting an unblemished season locally and dusting A.N. Myer (Niagara Falls) and Notre Dame (Welland) in regional play to advance.

In volleyball, three schools have advanced to OFSAA championships with Westdale leading the way at the senior “AAA” level. The Warriors who captured the city championship with an impressive 3-1 victory over Westmount back on February 19th, will head to North Bay as an unranked team looking to upset some of the top teams in the competition. They kick off their competition on Monday Morning at 9:00am battling Bill Crothers secondary. (Unionville). The Warriors will play again on Monday at 3:00pm and close pool play on Tuesday at 11:30am.

Sir Winston Churchill travels to Kenora, Ont., for the “AA” girls volleyball championship. The Bulldogs rank as the 18th seed in the 20 team event and will battle the eighth seeded CC Samuel-Genest Laser from Ottawa in their opening match scheduled for Monday morning at 9:00am. Churchill will also play at 3:00pm on Monday and then finish pool play at 11:30 on Tuesday.

Hamilton District Christian High ranks as the eighth ranked seed and will play in the girls volleyball “A” championship at Rockway Mennonite in Kitchener. Their first game is slated for Monday at 10:30am against Maranatha Christian Academy (Windsor).

Similar to the other championship formats, Hamilton District will play an afternoon match on Monday followed a final pool game on Tuesday morning. If successful they will advance to playoffs held Tuesday afternoon with play wrapping up Wednesday.
