Featured Athlete of the Week – Callum Darby – Sherwood

Callum Darby is one of Sherwood’s all-time great student athletes.  What separates Callum from the   other great athletes at Sherwood is his humble personality.   Callum has been very successful in a wide range of sports that he has played over his 4 plus years at Sherwood, but you woulCallum Darbyd never know it from him.  He is the ultimate team player who has always put his teammates’ needs ahead of his own, consistently using his own physical prowess and skills to help others.   Leading by example makes him a  “coach’s dream.”

Callum has competed consistently in HWDSB and SOSSA championships in volleyball, cross country and track and field.   He advanced to South Regionals in all four of his

high- school years competing in the 1500m, 3K and the 4×400 relay.    A great role model for all student athletes at Sherwood, Callum demonstrates a unique ability to balance academics and athletics with ease.   He has not only played volleyball, cross country and track and field teams, he has also participated on the boys’ soccer, junior hockey, badminton, co-ed volleyball ,ultimate frisbee and floorball teams.

Some of the highlights of Callum’s high school career are being named Sherwood’s Male Athlete of The Year, in both his Junior and Senior years, and being named first star at the Boys’ Volleyball All-Star game.

Amazingly, Callum still finds time to give back by volunteering his time to coach special needs students for the Hamilton Challenger Baseball Association.   He also has helped to coach the junior Girls’ Volleyball team at Sherwood, as well as being a role model as a student instructor at Sherwood’s Volleyball Clinic for grade 7 and 8 students.

The one thing that has eluded Callum in his time at Sherwood, is advancing to an OFSAA championship.  Hopefully he can achieve this goal this spring in track and field.   Best of luck to Callum in achieving this goal before moving on to university.
