HOCKEY: Westdale stuns Sir Winston Churchill in overtime thriller for boys division-II hockey championship

2015-16: HWIAC Boys Divsiion-II Hockey Champions: Westdale Warriors
HAMILTON (February 22, 2016) – Westdale’s Matt Mallard scored with 1:27 remaining in overtime to upset the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 3-2 for the HWIAC boys division-II hockey title on Monday at Chedoke Twin Pad Arena.

Mallard record three points including two goals to hand the Warriors their first Division-II title since 2013-14. Kieran Gargarello recorded the other goal in the win for the Warriors. Connor Pilon and James Mummery were the goal scorers for the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs.

Heading into the game Sir Winston Churchill held a 9-0-1 record while Westdale had posted 4-4-2 record. Churchill was ranked as the top seed in the Division-II final with Westdale ranked as the second seed.

While Sir Winston Churchill was unable to claim the city championship, they will advance to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championship later this week as Hamilton’s ‘AA’ representative. The SOSS championship goes February 24th at the Haldimand County Caledonia Centre in Caledonia, Ont. beginning at 9:30am. For more information visit www.sossa.on.ca.
