VOLLEYBALL: Westdale sweeps junior and senior girls championship

2015-16 HWIAC Senior Girls Volleyball Champions: Westdale Warriors
HAMILTON (February 19, 2016) – The Westdale Warriors continued their Hamilton public school championship roll on Friday claiming both the junior and senior girls volleyball titles.

The senior squad took out Westmount with a 3-1 victory while the junior squad dropped Waterdown 3-0. So far this year, Westdale has captured nine out of a possible 19 team titles available in HWIAC play.

The senior girls’ volleyball championship was a battle right from the beginning and easily could have gone either way with Westdale edging Westmount 3-1.

The opening set had the most dramatic shift with Westmount earning a 9-3 lead before Westdale powered back for a hard fought 28-26 win. The second set was no different with the Warriors narrowly taking it 25-23.

Westmount was able to take back the momentum early in the third set and cruised to a 25-10 victory before the Warriors were able to battle and earn the fourth set at 25-10 for the win.

The victory marked Westdale’s second straight senior girls’ volleyball championship and was the school’s fifth overall having won the city championship in 1978-79, 1979-80, 2001-02 as well as last year’s title.

Moving forward, Westdale (‘AAA’), Sir Winston Churchill (‘AA’) as well as Hamilton District Christian High (‘A’) will represent Hamilton at the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championships held next week. (For more information visit www.sossa.on.ca). If successful at SOSSA teams will advance to the provincial championships in each category.

In the junior girls’ championship, Westdale swept Waterdown District 3-0 to win their second junior girls championship in three seasons. Overall the Warriors have collected five junior girls’ championship titles.

Westdale powered their way to the victory securing set scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-20. The opening set was the toughest for Waterdown with Westdale jumping to a 13-1 advantage which turned out to be insurmountable.

With the win, Westdale has qualified for SOSSA (‘AA’) next week hosted by Waterdown District High School. Waterdown still has a chance to advance to SOSSA with Hamilton public receiving two bids into the event. To do so, Waterdown will have to win a Challenge Match against Sir Allan MacNab slated for Monday (Feb 22) to advance.

Hamilton District Christian High has also earned the berth into single ‘A’ SOSSA which is set for Cayuga Secondary next Wednesday. For more information visit www.sossa.on.ca)
