WATERPOLO: Westdale claims ninth straight senior girls waterpolo title

Westdale Warriors (2014 -15 Senior Girls Waterpolo Champions)

HAMILTON (April 14, 2015) – The dynasty continues as Westdale Secondary School captured their ninth straight Hamilton public senior girls waterpolo title on Tuesday edging Ancaster High School 1-0 at Jimmy Thompson Pool.

Westdale’s Liv Magnien scored the games only goal with three minutes and 14 second remaining in the final period to secure the victory for the Warriors. Breanne Hyslop notched the shutout for Westdale in the win.

The victory was the school’s 18th overall senior girls waterpolo title.

In the bronze medal game Westmount beat Dundas Valley 7-3. Westmount’s Marissa McComb had four goals in the win while Danielle Datzkiw registered two and Brianna Chapple added another in the win. Dundas Valley’s scores included Rily Kunc, Heather Nichols and Sarah Jerome.

Waterdown DHS (2014-15 Junior Girls Waterpolo Champions)

In the junior championship the No. 4 seeded Waterdown Warriors shocked the No. 2 seeded Sherwood Saints winning 5-4 with Waterdown’s Madison Couture scoring with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation.

Sherwood held a 4-3 lead heading into the final frame but a goal by Rachel Brown tied the game with Couture notching the game winner in the fourth period.

Brown registered a hat-trick in the game while the game winner was Couture’s second. Haley McComb had three goals while Alainee Miges added the other in the loss for Sherwood.

It marks just the second time Waterdown has won the junior girls waterpolo championship with the first coming in 2004-05.

The junior girls bronze medal game saw Westdale topple Saltfleet 9-0. Cassie Woodhouse starred in the game notching six of the nine goals for the Warriors. Sidney Jessome, Katie Agar and Zoe Sirko rounded out the scoring for Westdale.
