WATERPOLO: Dundas Valley captures first senior boys title; Westdale takes junior championship

2017-18 Senior Boys Water Polo Championship
HAMILTON (January 18, 2018) – The Dundas Valley Gryphons earned their first senior boys water polo title defeating the Westdale Warriors 5-1 at Hill Park Recreation Centre on Thursday evening.

Dundas Valley’s James Crowe had a hat-trick in the championship game while Derek deGelder and Ethan Rotsaert-Smith each had a goal en route to preventing perennial champions Westdale from securing their fourth title in five seasons.  

The Gryphons built a 2-0 lead heading into the final quarter before Westdale would respond.  Three goals in the fourth quarter sealed the victory.

The victory capped a perfect season for the Gryphons notching an unblemished 11-0 record.

In the bronze medal game, the Westmount Wildcats earned a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over the Ancaster Royals.  Westmount’s’ Marcos Urbina tallied a hat-trick including the overtime goal to hand Westmount the bronze medal.  Sam Gershkovich netted the other Westmount goal.

Ancaster’s Finn Mills had two goals in the loss while teammate Weston Farnworth added the other.
2017-18 Junior Boys Water Polo Championship
In the junior championship the No. 1 seeded Westdale Warriors capped a perfect season (6-0) knocking off the Ancaster Royals 7-3 to earn the school’s sixth junior boys water polo title in eight seasons.  

Jack Shanlin had four goals to lead the Warriors while Juan Peral added two.  Westdale’s Michael Forrester had the other goal when he opened the Warriors scoring in the first quarter.

Ancaster’s Thomas Walters scored twice in a losing cause with Caleb Burleigh nothing the other goal.

The junior boys bronze medal game saw Sherwood defeat Westmount 3-2.  Sherwood grabbed a quick 2-0 lead after the first quarter and added their third goal in the second quarter.  From there they played defence to hold on for the victory.

Scoring for the Saints were Stefan Daich, Rylan Wilmont and Josh Roman.  Westmount’s Stephen Chen netted the Wildcats two goals in the loss.

Sherwood’s team was comprised of all junior players who had never played the game prior to this season.
