BASKETBALL: Westdale grabs senior girls basketball championship; MacNab earns junior title

2017-18 Division-I Senior Girls Champions: Westdale Warriors

HAMILTON (November 10, 2017) – The Westdale Warriors captured the 2017-18 Senior Girls Division-I Championship besting the Waterdown Warriors 61-49 at McMaster University on Friday.

The win marked the 24th time in school history Westdale had won the senior girls’ title and marked the first time since the 2015-16 season they have landed on top of the public high school league.

Westdale’s Heidi Nelson poured in 20 points in the victory for Westdale while teammates Clare Smitherland had 11 points. Amy Stinson also recorded double-digit scoring in the win notching 10.

For Waterdown, Olivia Baker led the team in scoring with Beth Howlett adding 13 points in the loss.

Westdale used a 10-4 run in the early portion of the fourth quarter to pull away from Waterdown which led to their championship title. They advance to the SOSSA ‘AAA’ held next Thursday at Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary in Grimsby, Ont.

2017-18 Junior Girls Champions: Sir Allan MacNab LionsIn the junior girls’ championship, the Sir Allan MacNab Lions earned their first junior girls basketball championship since 1996-1997 season besting Guido de Bres 44-35.

MacNab was powered by Sianda Bikker who poured in 20 points with teammate Ranya Belkir breaking into double digits with 11. Guido de Bres’ Natalie Gelms was the top scorer for the Gryphons notching 14 points in the loss.

The Lions were the underdog throughout the playoffs finishing as the four seed. They qualified for the final by upsetting the No. 1 ranked Hamilton District Christian High 48-31. HDCH was previously undefeated before facing the Lions. Guido was ranked third.

Sir Allan MacNab qualifies for the Junior ‘AA’ SOSSA championship scheduled for November 21 at Eden High School in St. Catharines, Ont. Guido will visit HDCH on Monday for a challenge game to determine the SOSSA Zone 1 representative for the A school classification at SOSSA.

2017-18 Senior Girls Division-II Champions: Hamilton District Christian KnightsIn the senior division-II championship, Hamilton District Christian walked away as the top team defeating Sherwood 39-19.

Alyssa Hartman was the Knight top scorer posting 17 points in the win. Sherwood as led by Amber Hewitt who posted 15 of the Saints 19 points. The Knights will advance to the SOSSA “A” event which will be held next Thursday at Guido de Bres.
