Saltfleet, Churchill land on top at field hockey championship

2017-18 Girls Field Hockey Championship

HAMILTON (October 23, 2017) –  The Saltfleet Storm have regained their championship form defeating the Sherwood Saints 1-0 to capture the Hamilton public school board Division-I field hockey championship on Monday afternoon at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.

Hunter Cooper scored in the final minutes of the first half for the game’s only goal to notch which handed Saltfleet their fourth girls field hockey title in five seasons.   The Storm’s Skyler Cooper registered the shutout in the win

Saltfleet and Sherwood have met the last three years in the championship final with the Storm taking two of the three.

In the Division-II championship, Sir Winston Churchill walked away 2-0 winners over Nora Frances Henderson.  Goal scores for the Bulldogs were Sierra Estey and Mandy Heuberger

This marked the first championship the Bulldogs have celebrated on their new artificial turf field which opened just weeks ago.  The title is also the school’s fourth ever and first since the 2014-15 season.

Next up, Saltfleet will move on to the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) championship set for Wednesday (Oct. 25) in Beamsville, Ont.. The Storm are vying for a berth into OFSAA provincial championship held November 2-4 in Burlington, Ont. at Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary.
