VOLLEYBALL: Girls’ all-star game showcases talent across city

WATERDOWN (April 11, 2017) – The top high school girls’ volleyball players from across Hamilton rolled into Waterdown District High School to battle for bragging rights on Tuesday night in the annual all-star game between the Hamilton Public and Catholic school boards.

The catholic board came out on top earning 4-1 victories in both the junior and senior game.

Joey Hewick of Waterdown earned most valuable player honours for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) in the senior game while Roberta Todd of Cardinal Newman was recognized on the catholic board side.  Set scores in the tightly contested game were 11-25, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25 and 8-15 in favour of the HWCDSB.

HWDSB senior all-stars were: Ancaster HS – Paige Entwistle; Dundas Valley SS – Megan Richer; Guido de Bres CHS – Jaymee Vanerwoude; Hamilton DCH – Gabriella Riewald; Sherwood SS – Kelsey Soules; Sir Allan MacNab SS – Grace Heath, Taylor Morrison; Waterdown DHS – Joey Hewick, Ashley Mulholland, Karmen Krug; Westdale SS – Serena Otshudi, Sophie Hollingshead; Westmount SS – Aniyah Dwyer, Emily Scime; Coaches – Kara Kindree,  Jeanine MacIsaac (Waterdown DHS)

In the junior game Mia Miskovic of Westmount was named to most valuable player with Alexi Chevrier of École Secondaire Académie Catholique Mère-Teresa taking the same honours for the HWCDSB.  Scores from the junior game were 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25 and 12-15.  

Representing the HWDSB in the junior game were: Ancaster HS – Abby Alliston, Emily Kenny; Dundas Valley SS – Emma Lawlor, Theryn Corning, Laura Bishop; Hamilton District CH – Maryka Vanwyngaarden; Orchard Park SS – Dusana Bolic,  Jovana Bolic;  Waterdown DHS – Lauren Fitzgerald, Kaileigh Hayes; Westdale SS – Abinaci Bahra, Abby Macdonald; Westmount SS – Jillian O’Connel, Mia Miskovic; Coaches – Mike Smith (Dundas Valley SS), Mike Ongley (Waterdown DHS)

Proceeds raised from the game were donated to Climb For Cancer.
