Awards & Scholarships

Important Deadlines regarding upcoming University Scholarships.  See attached documents.

Potential applicants can search the scholarships that are available to first-year students at Ontario’s universities. Students can search by university, annual dollar value range, required grade range and other useful criteria. By performing multiple searches, students can ensure that they find all the scholarships available to them.

Check your college/university websites for information on awards/scholarships specific to your program and school. Apply by the deadline; obtain transcripts, letters of reference, etc. Let the Guidance Counsellors know you want to be nominated for specific awards and submit an up-to-date resume as soon as possible. Please access the following documents to view Major Scholarship links and deadlines as well as Universities and Colleges that grant SHSM students scholarships for earning the SHSM red seal.

 

Responsibilities of the student:

  1. Search various sources, websites, etc. for awards and scholarships.
  2. Check the awards for due dates and eligibility/criteria.
  3. Obtain the complete application form and procedures, available from the Guidance Office or download from websites.
  4. Complete the required information:
  • entire application form, personal information, etc.
  • obtain letters of reference, if required (ask early from your sources)
  • essay, if required (typed and proof-read)
  • school recommendation, if required, a signature or letter, ask a Counsellor
  • up to date transcript, ask a Counsellor
  • mail or submit online before due date

Resumes

Prepare a resume. It will be an invaluable tool for job searches, award and scholarship applications. Keep it on file and update as you complete activities. Provide copies to the people who are writing your letters of recommendation so that they know more about you. Resumes can be prepared in this format.

 

Proficiency Awards

An average of 80% must have been attained in the required number of subjects taken that school year. These awards are given at the Junior Awards assembly and at the graduation ceremonies.

Year 1 – A student must have successfully completed 8 courses and the best 7 courses are used to calculate the student’s average.

Year 2 – A student must have successfully completed 8 courses and the best 7 courses are used to calculate the student’s average.

Year 3 – A student must have successfully completed 7 senior courses (grade 11 and 12 courses) and the best 6 senior courses are used to calculate the student’s average.

Year 4 – A student must have successfully completed 6 senior courses (grade 11 and 12 courses) and the best 6 senior courses are used to calculate the student’s average.

Ontario Scholars – A student has earned Ontario Scholar recognition when the student has been recommended for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and the best 6 grade 12 courses are calculated to be 80% or higher.

Opportunity for students attending post secondary  bachelor’s degree, exhibit financial need, involved in extra-curricular and community, Canadian citizen.

Canadian scholarships are available for students in all provinces and territories in Canada interested in pursuing post-secondary education.

  • Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and begin a Bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university in Canada starting Fall 2026
  • Prove financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per household is required)
  • Be involved in co-curricular activities and community service
  • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 70%

The CWA Foundation Secondary School Awards Program was founded in 2014 for the purposes of promoting and encouraging the pursuit of post-secondary education in welding. The awards are for students who show an aptitude and passion for the welding industry and/or financial need, and are applying to a certified welding program offered by a publicly funded Canadian College or University. 

Selected students will receive between $2000-2500 towards their tuition which will be paid upon proof of acceptance, directly to the educational institution identified on the application.

The Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award is a National award established in 2013 to honour the leadership of Mr. Doria as Chairman of the CWB Group Board of Directors from 2009-2013 for the purposes of promoting and encouraging the pursuit of a career in Welding Engineering. Mr. Doria has been an active participant in the welding industry for over 42 years and is President and CEO of Lincoln Electric Company of Canada. This award will be given to a Canadian secondary student who shows exemplary academic excellence, a demonstrated passion for the welding industry, and community involvement, that is entering a full-time technician or technologist program in welding with a desire to pursue a career in the industry.
One recipient will be chosen annually and will be awarded the amount of $3,000.

North American Van Lines will select two winners to receive an award of $1,000 each after the scholarship deadline on December 15th, 2024.
