Threat at Sherwood

Dear Sherwood families,

This letter is to inform you that we learned today of a threat to our school community. The issue references a threat related to shooting written on a bathroom wall.

We take incidents like these very seriously as safety is our primary concern. Following our Safe Schools protocol, we immediately contacted Hamilton Police Service who continue to investigate.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is also investigating this incident further under the Student Behaviour and Discipline Policy and will take appropriate action.

Recently, there has been an increased number of threats made against school communities and Hamilton Police Service is working closely with HWDSB. As a result, the Director of Education and the Chair of the Board shared an open letter to the community.

We continue to work with our school community to ensure students understand the impact threats have on individuals and the overall school climate.

This situation may make students anxious or upset. If so, you may want to refer to tips for adults supporting children and youth after distressing events. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to staff for support.

Social Work supports will be available to students as well as Employee Support and Wellness for staff to offer support during this distressing time.

Students may wish to use the HWDSB Helps app, an anonymous way to find help for themselves for one another. Students can text 905-963-0066, download the app for iOS and Android, or engage in the web chat at www.hwdsb.on.ca/hwdsbhelps.

We thank all families for their understanding. We thank police for their support.

If you have any questions, please contact our school office.

Sincerely,

Wendall Gillis
Principal
