Police Investigate Sexual Assault near Sherwood Secondary School

Dear families,

As you know, student safety is our top concern. This is why we were extremely disturbed to learn of a sexual assault affecting one of our students.

Hamilton Police Service is currently investigating a sexual assault that occurred on Friday. Witnesses are urged to contact police and residents are asked to check their surveillance cameras for suspicious activity.

On Friday, April 5, 2019, a student was walking when a male assaulted her.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 17-18-years-old, 6′ tall, with a heavy build and wearing black clothing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Shannon McLean at 905-546-3854 or Detective Sergeant Chris Kiriakopoulos at 905-540-6375. To provide information anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit your anonymous tips online at https://www.crimestoppershamilton.com

Police note that there is no guaranteed way to prevent a sexual assault. Sharing the details of these assaults is intended to provide the community information, and people are encouraged to trust their instincts. For confidential support, please call the Sexual Assault Centre’s 24-hour support line at 905-525-4162 or connect at www.sacha.ca, or the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre at www.hhsc.ca/sadv.

Sherwood is a caring school community and we are here to support students. We urge students to consider walking in pairs and to stay alert at all times.
