World Down Syndrome Day (March 21, 2024)

March 21st (or 3/21) is World Down Syndrome Day & we invite you to rock some colourful socks and/or wear blue and yellow to show your support of people with Down Syndrome. 

Socks have a similar shape to our body’s genetic chromosomes & people with Down Syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome (hence 3-21 is celebrated around the world on the 21st day of the third month of the year). This is also why you might hear people exchange references to Down Syndrome with Trisomy 21, which is newer, descriptive language.

People with Down Syndrome are increasingly visible in many parts of society compared with how they were treated in the past. But the community is still misunderstood & underestimated on a regular basis. Efforts to include these individuals can be good intentioned but there is much more that needs to be done for them to truly thrive
