Information and News

Kindergarten Registration – Kindergarten registration begins on Monday, February 3, 2020, for the 2020-21 school year.  Kindergarten is a 2-year program for students who will be 4 or 5 years old in 2020.  For more information on the Kindergarten program and how to register, please visit the HWDSB Kindergarten website at http://www.hwdsb.on.ca/kindergarten/.  We will also be welcoming families to kindergarten orientation in May (Date TBD). This will a great chance for families to visit the school with their child(ren) to learn more about kindergarten.  The date of our Kindergarten orientation will be posted closer to May.

RAZ Kids – This year, our primary classes will be using an online application called RAZ-Kids. This app provides meaningful online reading practice for students at school, and at home. Teachers use the app to assign students appropriate reading materials for their age and reading level. Students access their assigned eBooks through an interactive learning portal designed to keep them motivated and engaged. The app makes reading fun while allowing students to improve their reading skills by listening to books read aloud to them and reading eBooks at their own pace. Through the app, students can submit recordings of themselves reading. This allows students to playback the recordings to hear themselves read. Students also submit written responses to various prompts and complete quizzes that check for understanding. These recordings, written responses and answers to quizzes help teachers determine future lessons that students may need.  Parents/guardians can view the child’s progress at any time through the parent portal, as well as listen to any recordings or read any written responses submitted by their child. Teachers will be creating accounts using pseudonyms or parts of the student’s name but not their whole name. This is one strategy that we use to reduce students’ digital footprints. Once the accounts are created, families will receive a username, password and instructions to access the program at home. You can learn more about the app by reading RAZ Kids’ privacy policy and terms of service. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.
