Mary Hopkins Information and News

Progress Reports – This week (Tuesday) students will receive their Progress Reports. On this report, parents will see a checkmark to indicate their child’s general progress towards meeting the subject expectations.  The purpose of the Progress Report is also to communicate how well each student has demonstrated the necessary Learning Skills (Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, and Self-Regulation). These learning skills are important for your child’s success in school.  We suggest you use the progress report as a way of setting goals for the remainder of this term.  Think about one small change that your child can commit to and take the action to do it

Parent/Teacher Interviews – Progress Report interviews will occur during the evening of November 7th and /or during the day of November 8th.  This is an important opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s learning skills, work habits, academic strengths, and areas where growth is needed.  It is a time to share in goal setting and to celebrate the many achievements of our students.  A notice should have come home last week instructing parents on how to sign up for an interview.  You can also find a copy linked to this posting.  Parent Interview Letter

Halloween Day – We will be recognizing Halloween at Mary Hopkins through our annual parade.  We ask that if you are sending your child with a costume, that select a simplified version that they can manage on their own.  We ask that in choosing a costume for school, students consider that we have younger children in the building, as well as those who are sensitive to some of the imagery used during Halloween. We also ask that students do not bring props that are weapons to school.

Parents are welcome to view the parade by joining us on the playground(weather permitting) or in the gym. Please see the details below for our various classrooms.

Kindergarten Students
Our Kindergarten students will be participating in a Halloween Parade set to begin at about 9:30 a.m.  Students should come to school dress for the parade (i.e. wearing costume/Black and Orange).  All accessories and masks should stay at home as they may get lost or broken.  Please send a change of clothing and a large plastic bag so that your child can put their costume away after the parade.  Our Kindergarten teachers have asked that food/treats not be sent to school.

Grade 1 – 5 Students
Our Grade 1 – 5 students will also participate in a parade.  Students will change into their costumes after 2nd nutrition break and the parade will begin at approximately 2:10 p.m.  Please refer to individual teacher communications with regard to class-specific celebrations.

Ticks – We have had some reports from families that ticks are active in the community.  Be sure to check your child/pets regularly and consult Hamilton Public Health if you have any further question. https://www.hamilton.ca/public-health/health-topics/lyme-disease-ticks

RAZ Kids – RAZ kids reading program will be returning this year.  Students (K-3 English) should be coming home with their usernames and passwords this week.  This program is provided to Mary Hopkins students through parent fundraising.
