Meet the Staff and OYAP

Dear Parents of Students of Norwood Park

Our school would like to remind you that Meet the Educator Night is Thursday October 24, 2024
from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
We want to make you aware of an opportunity to learn about the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship
Program.
We will have an information available regarding OYAP. Skilled trades will be in high demand for
many years. Wages and compensation in these skilled jobs are above average.
Here is some information regarding OYAP.
Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a unique initiative designed to
provide high school students with hands-on experience in a variety of skilled trades. By
combining classroom instruction with on-the-job training, OYAP offers students a
valuable opportunity to explore potential career paths and gain essential skills for the
workforce.
Eligibility for OYAP
To be eligible for OYAP, students must meet the following criteria:
● Be enrolled in a secondary school program
● Have a grade 11 or 12 credit in the related subject area
● Be at least 16 years old
● Obtain written consent from their parent or guardian
● Meet any additional requirements set by the specific trade or employer
Employment Trends for Male and Female Apprentices
While the skilled trades have traditionally been dominated by men, there has been a
growing movement to encourage more women to consider careers in these fields. While
progress has been made, women still remain underrepresented in many trades.
Data on employment trends for male and female apprentices in Ontario is not readily
available. However, it is generally recognized that men continue to outnumber women in
most skilled trades, particularly in areas such as construction and manufacturing.
Starting Salaries for Electricians, Carpenters, and Plumbers
Starting salaries for apprentices in Ontario can vary depending on factors such as the
specific trade, employer, location, and level of experience. However, the following
provides a general comparison of starting salaries for electricians, carpenters, and
plumbers:
● Electricians: Apprentices can expect to earn a starting salary of around $20-$25
per hour.
● Carpenters: Starting salaries for carpenter apprentices typically range from $18-
$22 per hour.
● Plumbers: Plumber apprentices may earn a starting salary of approximately
$19-$24 per hour.
Invitation to Young Women
The skilled trades offer a rewarding and fulfilling career path for individuals who enjoy
working with their hands and solving problems. Young women are particularly
encouraged to consider these opportunities, as they can lead to well-paying jobs with
excellent prospects for advancement.
OYAP provides a valuable pathway for young women to explore the skilled trades and
gain the necessary skills and experience to succeed in these fields. By participating in
OYAP, women can break down stereotypes, challenge traditional gender roles, and
pave the way for future generations of female tradespeople.
