Elementary School and Staffing Reorganization
Each fall, HWDSB reviews elementary student enrolment in each school, and reorganizes staffing if actual enrolment differs from spring projections.
This year, COVID-19 has challenged many of our operations, including this fall’s staff reorganization.
A typical year may see a small variation between projected and actual enrolment. This year, with more families keeping children out of school, our fall enrolment is significantly below our spring projections.
This is a trend occurring across Ontario, and means that this fall’s staffing reorganization will be extensive and complex.
As we reorganize, we will adhere to enhanced public health measures including physical distancing in learning spaces. You may recall the HWDSB Trustees direction to hire additional educators, to keep elementary classes safer.
These changes will not be easy. Some educators will be declared surplus and will be informed about their options. This adds to the challenges of the pandemic. We know how difficult it will be on a personal and professional level, and we are offering our supports.
An enrolment summary will be included in an update to the Finance and Facilities Committee tonight (5:30 p.m. October 22, 2020). The agenda will be posted before the meeting; audio will be posted Friday morning. We will share more information at the next Board Meeting.
Direct communication with impacted families will start October 27, 2020.
