Fire Alarm Update – December 8, 2014

On Tuesday, December 8th, at Helen Detwiler school we detected an unpleasant odour in the middle school portapack that is the extension to our school. To ensure student safety, we evacuated students from the portapack and our school until the fire department arrived. All students returned to the building after the fire department ensured the school’s safety.

For the remainder of the day, Kindergarten to Grade 5 students continued their regular daily routines. Students in grades 6 to 8 were supervised by teachers in the gymnasium until fire crews ensured the safety of the portapak.

We commend our staff and students for their response today, and wanted to inform you of today’s events in case you had questions.

Watch: The True Meaning of Giving
Janet Lee Elementary students held a holiday winter bazaar. While the event allowed students to pick up items for someone special this holiday season, the actual purpose was to raise funds for displaced families in Iraq and Syria. First hand accounts of violence in the region from a class mates father, that is currently working in Iraq, inspired the school's Social Justice League to plan the event and support the cause.
