Zones of Regulation

Zones of Regulation

Have you heard your child speak about “zones of regulation”?  Rosedale students and staff have been learning about these zones of self regulation.  By identifying what “zone” you are in, you can use various strategies to get you to the “green zone” which is the optimal place to be.  By controlling our emotions and impulses we improve our ability to problem solve.

Here are some words to describe how you are feeling in the various zones…

Green Zone – calm, happy, relaxed, proud, content, focused, ready to learn.  If you are in the green zone you might be “on top of the world” or “cool as a cucumber”.

Blue Zone – tired, depressed, sick, sad, exhausted, hurt.  If you are in the blue zone you might be “moving slowly”, “feeling blue”, “under the weather” or “downhearted”.

Yellow Zone – silly, annoyed, excited, worried, overwhelmed, frustrated, crabby.  If you are in the yellow zone you might be “wound up” or have “butterflies in your stomach”.

Red Zone – yelling, aggressive, mad, mean, elated, terrifies, out of control.  If you are in the red zone you might be “about to explode”, “lost my cool”, or be “thrilled to bits”.

We are learning various strategies to get us to the green zone like deep breathing, understanding the “size of our problem”, counting to 10 or squeezing a stress ball.  Stay tuned for more information!  You might like to try this way of thinking at home.
