GLE (Learning Strategies) Gap Closing Opportunity for students Grades 8-12

BACKGROUND
In response to Minister of Education Lecce’s request that school boards develop summer
learning opportunities for students with special education needs that address gap-closing, skill
building and readiness for the upcoming school year HWDSB will be offering Learning
Strategies, Skills for Success in Secondary School (GLE1O/GLE2O) and Advanced Learning
Strategies, Skills for Success after Secondary School (GLE3O/GLE4O) as part of our menu of
Continuing Education courses this summer.
Due to the ongoing restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the course will be offered as
a remote learning experience through our board standard platform, The HUB and meeting tool,
MS Teams.
Enrolment will be limited to students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and with the
approval of their current school principal. The course will be available as a reach ahead for
students transitioning from grade 8 to grade 9.

COURSE OVERVIEW
GLE1O/GLE2O – Learning Strategies, Skills for Success in Secondary School
This course focuses on learning strategies to help students become better, more independent
learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal
management skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and
achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. The course helps students build
confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and
beyond.

GLE3O/GLE4O – Advanced Learning Strategies, Skills for Success after Secondary
School
This course improves students’ learning and personal-management skills, preparing them to
make successful transitions to work, training, and/or postsecondary education destinations.
Students will assess their learning abilities and use literacy, numeracy, and research skills and
personal-management techniques to maximize their learning. Students will investigate trends
and resources to support their postsecondary employment, training, and/or education choices
and develop a plan to help them meet their learning and career goals.
