Dalewood Parents & Guardians,
On Tuesday, October 31st, students will have the opportunity to participate in a school-wide dance event. Participation is optional for all students and alternative activities will be offered to those students who do not wish to participate. Concessions will be sold during the event: snacks – $2 and drinks – $1. All proceeds from the concession sales will go towards this year’s commencement.
For any students planning to dress up for Halloween, we ask the following to be considered:
Cultural appropriation means taking or borrowing a look or trait from a culture that is not your own. Costumes that are based on people’s culture are offensive, harmful and insensitive. The following are suggested questions to reflect on when choosing a costume to avoid being disrespectful or offensive:
• Is my costume making fun of a group of people, their culture, religion and/or belief systems?
• Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures, religions and/or belief systems?
• Am I altering my skin color, facial/body features to make it like a particular race, ethnicity, or cultural group?
• Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?
In addition to the above, costumes must not include any items resembling weapons of any kind, masks worn must not impede vision for safety reasons, and costumes must not pose a trip hazard for themselves or others, especially while navigating staircases.
Thanks,
Dalewood School Team
