Please review the information:
Student safety is a priority at Dalewood. Every new school year is a time to reflect on successes and areas for improvement. There have been some changes regarding students leaving school property during second nutrition break. I have consulted with Dalewood staff, HWDSB policy, neighbouring schools and safe school protocols.
- Grade 7 and 8 students can leave Dalewood property at second nutrition break with permission via the Parent Portal (no student will leave school property at first nutrition break as the afternoon attendance takes place after second nutrition break). Grade 6 students will not be permitted to leave school property during any nutrition break.
- Parents/guardians are required to provide permission for their child/children via the Parent Portal if you are permitting them to go out for lunch during second nutrition breaks. We will be reviewing the consent during the first week of school. Please note your child/children will not be able to go out for lunch until the second week of school (September 8). Please make sure that you have provided permission via the Parent Portal by Friday, September 5.
- New this year, we are asking that if students go out for lunch during second nutrition breaks, that they enjoy their food and/or beverages at the location of purchase. We will not be permitting food back into the school upon their return. We found last year that students were bringing back multiple items and there was a disruption to student learning.
- Being on time after break is extremely important. We take attendance upon return and want to make sure that all students are accounted for. If students are late returning from break, their permission to leave property may be revoked.
- Food delivery services are not permitted, such as Uber Eats, Doordash, etc. As you can imagine, our office is extremely busy, and student safety is always a priority. If you need to drop off a lunch for your child/children or have a special circumstance, where a food service needs deliver, you will need to contact the office directly. We will not let students off property to receive any deliveries.
- We will not accept parent letters and/or emails granting permission to go out for lunch. Last year, many students wrote fake letters which created safety concerns. The volume of emails granting permission on a daily is not sustainable from an office perspective; please use the Parent Portal to grant your child/children permission.
- Students will be provided with a lunch pass based on the data received in the Parent Portal. Students will drop their lunch pass at second nutrition break to the office and retrieve it upon arrival. This will be a quick visual of who is out from each class and at what time students return. If students are late returning from break, lunch permissions will be discussed as we want to ensure the safety of all students.
- If students are walking home for lunch, permission can be granted via the Parent Portal for the school year as well.
