Principal Update – Dec 8

Friday, December 08, 2017

This has been an exciting week at Ancaster Meadow. It started on Monday with our Senior Boys’ Volleyball team winning the City Championship. Mr. Trikoupis and the students spent countless hours practicing and their hard work has paid off – Congratulations!

The week ended with the annual Home & School Holiday Bazaar. Thank you to our Home & School Association and all the volunteers who ran the Holiday Bazaar. There was a ton of energy around the school today. It was a wonderful event and a lot of fun.

This week I had the pleasure to be in classrooms observing students exploring problem solving through coding as part of the Hour of Code event. I also got to watch the awesome performance of Rudolph by 6A. There are great activities happening in our classrooms everyday and these are only some examples.

We have our Kindergarten Holiday Assembly on the morning of Fri Dec 15. The Holiday Assembly for all grades will be Thurs Dec 21. There will be a dance for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 on the afternoon of Fri Dec 22.

Students in grades 2-8 will be going to Ancaster High’s presentation of Beauty and the Beast on Fri Dec 15.

I would like to provide an update to parents about some issues related to our building facilities. Our exterior lights have been repaired and are being upgraded to LEDs. These lights are brighter than the current bulbs and are also more energy efficient. The timer settings on the exterior lights have also be adjusted to have the lights stay on over night. With our Facilities Department, I have participated in a review of our current exterior lighting and some upgrades are being planned to help with building security. There are several other issues related to building security that were brought forward at our last School Council meeting. As I continue to work through this issues I will be reporting back in my weekly updates.

At the School Council meeting on Thurs Jan 18th, our Hamilton Police School Liaison, Officer Drozdz, will be presenting to parents on social media safety. This topic is always of interest and I encourage all to attend.

With the cold weather settling in, it is important for all families to be aware of the HWDSB policy on Inclement weather http://www.hwdsb.on.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Weather-Cancellation-Infographic-1.pdf If buses are cancelled due to weather than all schools are closed for the day. Please pay attention to the HWDSB website and local media for morning announcements.

The HWDSB Social Work department is hosting Cool Little Kids® An Anxiety Prevention Program: Working with Parents to support young children who are shy, withdrawn, and anxious. A parent information night will be January 16, 2018 from 6:30 pm-7:30pm at the HWDSB Education Centre.

Have a great weekend,
Simon Goodacre, Principal

How HWDSB Handles Inclement Weather

Friday, December 01, 2017

As winter approaches, we want to remind all HWDSB families about how we make the decision to cancel school and board operations. This is often a difficult call to make, and is made with the safety and security of our students and staff in mind.

Principal Update Nov 24

Friday, November 24, 2017

Hello,

This week’s update has a variety of information from both the school and HWDSB.

Our Home & School Association continues to be very busy. A reminder that pizza orders for the January through March term are due Dec 6th; due to the volume of orders, late orders cannot be accepted. There is a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings on Wed Nov 29 from 5 – 10pm where 10% of your bill will go the fundraising of the Home & School Association. Our parent volunteers are also extremely busy preparing for the annual Holiday Bazaar on Friday Dec 8th.

The Ancaster Meadow Student Council has also launched our Winter Clothing drive. Starting on Mon through to Dec 15 please bring in gently used or new winter clothing items to donate to local shelter organizations. The Student Council sock drive in October was a great success, let’s see if we can match our success with this drive.

As the weather gets colder it is also important that students have appropriate clothing for the weather. Other than extreme weather, students will be outside during recess. Students should have warm coats, hats, and mitts. However with the extra clothing, our Lost and Found is again filling up quickly. It is located outside the gym doors. If you are missing clothing, please check it out. Due to the volume of items, clothing is donated roughly every 6-8 weeks.

Our volleyball teams have been busy in the playoffs. There have been a number of close games. It is great to see the dedication of both our students and coaches. This week we will have students participating in the Ancaster High floorball tournament.

A reminder that Friday Dec 1 is a PA Day and there is no school for students. Our staff professional development that day will primarily focus on early reading skills and math development.

Last week, I shared the TipOFF resource, this week I am sharing the revised HWDSB Parent Guide

Principal Update – Nov 17

Friday, November 17, 2017

Hello,

This week started with a “Fear Factor” taste challenge for Mr. Blunsdon and myself, it was part of a celebration assembly to recognize the school surpassing its goal for fundraising in the Terry Fox run. Ancaster Meadow raised over $6 100 this year and has raised over $66 000 since the school opened twelve years ago. This is a fantastic accomplishment. A thank you to Cindy Meyers at Ancaster Dominos for donating the pizza for the class fundraising awards.

Mr. LoSchiavo was featured last Sunday on CHML 900 highlighting the importance of Remembrance Day services in schools. Mr. LoSchiavo and his 78 class organized a wonderful Junior/Intermediate assembly to honour the this important day. We also had an assembly that was age appropriate for our K to 3 students.

As a follow up to the trip to the play Fatty Legs, a story of the Residential school experience, we welcomed the Woodland Cultural Centre in for a presentation to our gr 6 classes regarding the Residential school experience. This workshop is intended to explore the truths of what happened at residential schools, the impact on the indigenous family, the loss of cultural identity and the lasting effects of systemic racism still felt today.

At the School Council meeting this past Tuesday I highlighted the areas of focus for our school annual plan. This aligns with the Strategic Directions of the HWDSB. There are three areas of focus:

Equity and Well Being – Students feel that their culture and background is represented in the classroom.

Reading (K-1) – 90% of students in Kindergarten and grade 1 will be progressing well on a continuum of oral language and early reading skills.

Math (gr 2-8) – Teachers in each grade are monitoring student progress in a math skill specific to each grade. The goal is to monitor student progress in this skill and reduce the number of students having difficulty.

On Tuesday our Gr 5 and 6 students will be  going to the movie Wonder. Some classes are reading the book and using it as an opportunity to talk about issues of bullying.

This Wed Nov 22 is the Gr 8 parent night at Ancaster High from 6-8pm. All grade 8 families are encouraged to attend. To find out more information about high school. For those grade 8 families considering the Westmount program please note the parent information night is Thurs Nov 30. Westmount is a unique program and there is a specific process that is required for registration, it is important that interested families attend the information session.

An additional piece of information for our grade 8 families is that we have had to move the Graduation Date  to Wed June 20th.

Looking ahead, a reminder that Fri Dec 1 is a PA Day and there is no school for students.

Information about the HWDSB TipOFF program is attached to this update. TippOFF is an online/ app based option for students and parents to anonymously report concerns. Please see the attachment for details. A poster is also located by the front entrance.

Mathies.ca, hosted by Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (OAME), is designed for Ontario K – 12 students and parents. This website includes games, learning tools, activities, and additional supports for students to explore, build and enhance their mathematical thinking. A parent ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section includes: “How can I help with the learning of mathematics?”, “What mathematics activities can we do together?”, “What digital supports are available?” and “What additional support is available?” http://oame.on.ca/mathies/

Have a great weekend.

Principal update Nov 10

Friday, November 10, 2017

Hello,

I will keep my weekly update short this week. I am highlighting two items.

First, I want to congratulate students and staff on the Remembrance Day Assemblies held this morning. Our dedicated staff arranged for a Kindergarten and Primary assembly which was followed by a Junior/Intermediate assembly. I would like to thank the staff and students who were dedicated in planning and participating in these events. They were a true tribute to our veterans.

Second, I would like to point out to parents that a letter regarding an incident at the school overnight was sent home with students at the end of the day. It is also posted on our school website as a separate letter. I want to echo the letter in that the school takes all incidents seriously and we follow all school board protocols in regards to working with Hamilton Police Services. If you have any questions please reach out through email or by phone.

Have a great weekend,
Simon Goodacre, Principal

Principal Update Nov 2

Thursday, November 02, 2017

Hello,

Just a reminder that Friday is a PA Day tomorrow. There is no school for students. There are parent-teacher interviews occurring this evening and tomorrow.

For our families that are impacted by the delayed buses, I want to assure you that the school understands and shares your frustration. It is something that we want a resolution to as soon as possible. I have been in contact with both Transportation Services and the superintendent’s office regarding the issue. Parents are still encouraged to phone the Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services at 905-523-2318 with concerns.

In regards to transportation, if you drop your son or daughter off at school please consider using near by streets or parks as the drop off location. There is a crossing guard in front of the school and it is easy for students to walk the final distance. During pick up and drop off times the priority in the parking lot is for the school buses. The traffic in the parking lot has been very busy and unfortunately many parents have not been very considerate in regards to congestion, safety, and parking. Please help us maintain a safe and orderly parking lot.

On Monday, our grade 8 students will be attending Theatre Burlington’s presentation of Fatty Legs. The play is a story that highlights the injustices of the Residential School System. It is a powerful and important message for our students.

Next Friday, Ancaster Meadow will be holding Remembrance Day Assemblies to honour the sacrifice of Canada’s Armed Forces both past and present. Poppies are available in the school office; poppy stickers are available for our younger students.

Our volleyball teams continue to be very busy and successful but Ancaster Meadow has a number of other activities going on.  Our Robotics Club is busy building a completion table and Vex robots. The HWDSB has some excellent high school robotics programs and our club is connecting with them to develop their program. We also have a team of interested students entering the Beaver Computing contest.

As I have mentioned in early updates, the academic focus for school planning is early reading skills in Kindergarten and grade 1 and math skills for grade 2 through 8.  I will be including some parent resources in these areas in many weekly updates. This week is regarding looking for opportunities to “talk math” in everyday situations.

Everyday Mathematics: Daily Decisions

We all use mathematics daily in what we do. Involve your child in using numbers to solve problems and make those everyday decisions with you. For example:

“Do we have enough plates and utensils for all the guests coming for the birthday party?”
“We are doubling this recipe. How much of all the ingredients will we need?”
“We are fertilizing the lawn. The fertilizer bag covers three square meters. How many will we need?”
“This store is selling the game you want for 20% off of $27.00. That store is selling the same game for $19.99. Where should we shop?”
From

I have also included a pdf for a McMaster tutoring program called Smart Step.

Smart Steps Poster

Have a great weekend.

As Progress Reports come home with students, it is an excellent time to make sure that you have connected with your son or daughter’s teacher this year. Parent-Teacher interviews are this Thursday (Nov 2) evening and during the school day on Friday (Nov 3). Please contact teachers directly to arrange an interview time. While these dates are for formal interviews, parents are welcome and encouraged to contact teachers at other times. Many teachers have a class newsletter or class blog that highlights activities on a regular basis.

Ancaster Meadow has a wide variety of extra-curricular activities happening. Whether sports, Student Council, music, or STEM interests, students are encouraged to pay attention to the daily announcements. In addition to being read over the PA each day, the announcements are broadcast to the TV in the Foyer and to the website. A number of school activities are also on the school calendar accessible through the website. Parents can enter their email and subscribe to the website to receive automatic updates. You can also follow the @AncasterMeadow Twitter account to stay up to date. A weekly Principal’s update is also posted to the website every Friday.

The Ancaster Meadow school plan is focused on two main elements: early reading skills and math improvement. The Kindergarten and Grade 1 staff are primarily focused on the monitoring and improvement of early reading skills. The teachers in Grade 2 to 8 are paying particular attention to improving student’s performance in math.

Principal Update: Oct 27

Friday, October 27, 2017

This week’s Principal’s update will be very brief. Progress Reports will be coming home with students on Mon Oct 30 and a paper update will be sent home. The paper update will be kept to one page with a full version posted to the website. The update will highlight some resources available to families for Early Reading, Math, and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

We have had a lot of volleyball being played this week at Ancaster Meadow. The highlight being the participation of four of our teams in the Ancaster High tournament. Our Junior Boys’ team won their division.

The Book Fair will be on next week with some hours open during Parent-Teacher interviews.

Parent-Teacher interviews will be held on the evening of Thurs Nov 2 and during the school day on Friday Nov 3. Please contact your son or daughter’s teacher directly to arrange an interview time. A reminder that the Friday of Parent-Teacher interviews (Nov 3) is a PA Day and there is no school for students that day.

Have a great weekend,

Simon goodacre, Principal

Principal’s update – Oct 20th

Friday, October 20, 2017

What a fantastic week of wonderful weather. We took advantage of the weather to run one of our required fire drills. All schools are required to run a number of different drills throughout the school year to be prepared in the event of an emergency. At the bottom of this message is a graphic that details the variety of emergency procedures that schools must be prepared for.  In the coming week we will be coordinating with our Hamilton Police Liaison Officer to run our required Lockdown drill.

We have had a few staffing changes this month. Ms. Bucciacchio has taken a job as a Reading Specialist for the school board. Mr. Toisi is our new teacher for 5A. Ms. Julia is also joining us for class 1C.

Our sports teams were some of the first extra-curricular activities to start this year but Ancaster Meadow has some amazing activities in different areas. Our Robotics club is meeting most Tuesday and Thursdays during nutrition break. Mathstronaut’s STEAM program is being organized for after school. We also had students complete the Caribou math contest and the Primary choir has begun.

There are many different ways students can become involved in the school. Students can listen to the daily announcements for opportunities and the announcements are also repeating on the school website so that parents can review them with students at home if they are interested.

Our Student Council is still running Socktober. Please donate new socks for local shelters. There is a contest for the class that brings in the most pairs. The Student Council is also running a Halloween dance for students in grades 6, 7, 8. Halloween plans for other grades will be communicated through agendas and class newsletters.

Parent-Teacher interviews are being held the evening of Thursday Nov 2 and during the school day on Friday Nov 3. Parents should contact teachers directly to arrange interview times. Homeroom teachers can help coordinate an interview time with a rotary subject teacher if necessary. If you are having difficulty contacting a teacher, please call the Main Office.

Our Lost and Found area continues to grow. If you are missing clothing or other items it is worthwhile to check the Lost and Found area located outside the gym. The clothing is periodically collected and donated.

Have a great weekend.

Simon Goodacre, Principal

Socktober 2017

Thursday, October 19, 2017

This is our second year doing Socktober. The idea behind Socktober is to collect socks to donate to those in need! Socks are especially important during the winter months, and we are trying to help people of all ages. Last year, we were able to accomplish 2,223 socks donated in total! Our goal this year is to reach 2,225 socks. With the help and support of our amazing school, we will be able to reach and surpass that goal.

It was wonderful to see such a large turnout at the Meet the Teacher evening on Thursday. The weather was perfect and our staff did a great job in showcasing their classrooms. It was nice to see students taking pride and ownership in showing parents their work. A thank you to all our parent volunteers through our Home & School Association that organized the BBQ.

The next meeting of our School Council and Home & School Association is this coming Thursday Oct 12th at 6:30pm. New parents are always welcome to attend these meetings.

As you can see, it is a busy time of year at Ancaster Meadow!

I wish everyone an enjoyable long weekend.

Changes to Kindergarten Communication of Learning

Friday, October 06, 2017

At HWDSB, we know that parent engagement fosters student success. We want to be as clear as possible about changes to how schools report on learning in Kindergarten.

In the past at HWDSB, family members could attend “observation visits” in Kindergarten. For the 2017-18 school year, we will be using the new, written Kindergarten report provided by the Ministry of Education.

Principal update – Sept 29

Friday, September 29, 2017

Hello,

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of September already. I have truly enjoyed my first month at Ancaster Meadow. It is a wonderful school with amazing students and staff.

As we move into a new month, “Socktober” season starts at Ancaster Meadow. This is a clothing drive that collects socks (only new) for local homeless shelters . This is the first of many events organized by our Student Council this year. In addition to our sock drive, students at Ancaster Meadow are busy fundraising for the Terry Fox run on Fri Oct 6th. Our fundraising goal is an ambitious $5 000.

A reminder that the Meet the Teacher night will be Thurs Oct 5th from 5-7pm. Our Home & School Association has arranged for Turtle Jacks to run a BBQ (hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs), Domino’s pizza will also be available. Teachers will be in their classrooms showcasing their programs for the year. Individual parent-teacher interviews will be arranged Nov 2nd and 3rd with specific information coming at later dates.

Our Home & School Association has been busy! The last day for pizza orders in Mon Oct 2nd. Orders must be made online and no late orders can be accepted. This is huge undertaking and we thank our parent volunteers for their hard work.

This Friday, staff at Ancaster Meadow wore orange in recognition of a national day of remembrance regarding Residential Schools. Some individual class teachers talked to their classes about the history of the Residential School System and the lasting impact on the Indigenous communities in this country. Ancaster Meadow staff will be learning about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommendations and the role that schools play in the reconciliation process this year. Recognizing the importance of the relationship with the local Indigenous communities is an important component of the diversity at Ancaster Meadow.

I am please to announce that Mathstronauts will be coming to Ancaster Meadow. This program is run by McMaster students and focuses on Math, Science and Engineering. Parent registration and information will be at Meet the Teacher.

Busing is still a frustration for some families, parents are encouraged to check hamiltonschoolbus.ca for information regarding delays. Parents concerned about delays should contact the Hamilton Wentworth Student Transportation Service at 905- 523-2318. Some bus routes have had to be rerouted to address capacity issues, letters have gone home to families that have route changes. Due to the late route changes curtesy busing applications that are on file will be looked at next week.

Have a great weekend,
Simon Goodacre, Principal

Principal Update – Sept 22

Friday, September 22, 2017

Hello,

While students enjoyed a shorten week of school this week, the staff at Ancaster Meadow were busy at work on the PA Day. There was some required Health and Safety training covered but the most important focus for staff was looking at student performance in two key areas; staff in Kindergarten and grade 1 were focused on reading and early literacy skills, teachers for grades 2 through 8 were looking at student math performance. Examining student achievement in these areas will be the focus of staff work at staff meetings and PA days.

This coming Monday September 25th, our Home & School Association will be running a Freezie Day. The Home & School Association is also arranging for pizza orders. This is a huge undertaking; orders are due by Oct 2nd and late orders cannot be accepted. Payments should be made through SchoolCash online https://hwdsb.schoolcashonline.com

Extra-curricular activities are gearing up and starting quickly. Both our senior girls’ and boy’s 3-pitch teams had a lot of fun at early tournaments this week. Junior swimming is on the go and volleyball tryouts have started. In addition to sports, our Student Council is starting and looking forward to planning some school events for students this year. Families can allows follow the daily announcements on the school website.

Our Meet the Teacher night is Thurs Oct 5th from 5-7pm. We are looking at having some food trucks on site for families to have an option for dinner. This is a great time to come out and meet your child’s teacher and find out more about the classroom.

The HWDSB is working on a school video surveillance renewal plan. As part of this process, we are asking for your input. Please tell us what you think before the end of October, 2017 by clicking HERE.

Have a great weekend,
Simon

Principal’s Message – Sept 15

Friday, September 15, 2017

While school is always a busy place at the beginning of September, Ancaster Meadow has had an excellent start of the school year. I want to thank all our staff for their hard work. I continued to be impressed with the positive energy from students and staff.

A number of activities are already on the go. Students are encouraged to get involved in the many activities that Ancaster Meadow has to offer. Tryouts and meetings are on the morning announcements. The announcements are also on the TV in the foyer and on the school website.

Parents are encouraged to make contact with their child’s teacher and discuss any questions or concerns you might have. Many of our teachers have their email posted on the school website, other teachers can be reached by phoning the school.

Meet the Teacher night is scheduled for Thursday Oct 5th from 5-7pm. This is a chance to meet your child’s teacher and find out about what is going on in the classroom. The Meet the Teacher night is not parent-teacher interviews; the event is a time to find out about the classroom as a whole and not a time to discuss individual student concerns. Parent -Teacher interview will be scheduled Nov 30 and Dec 1 (more details will follow).

Our first School Council and Home and School Association is this coming Tuesday Sept 19th at 6:30pm. The School Council meeting will have elections for members at this meeting. These two organizations provide excellent opportunities for parents to be involved and find out more about what is happening in the school.

Busing has presented a few challenges during start up. While the school is willing to work with parents on making this process as smooth as possible, ultimately busing is handled by the Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services. They can be reached 905-523-2318. The school will accept requests for curtesy transportation. These requests are dependent on existing bus space. Schools can only start approving curtesy requests at the start of October.

A few operation items for parents to be aware of:

Our school store is open again. Chips, cookies, frozen yogurt and milk $1.00   Popcorn $2.00

A reminder that our school has students with life threatening allegeries. Please send lunches that are Nut Safe.

The school front door is for access during the school day. Early and late access for Umbrella Daycare is through the side door in the Daycare area.

Please register for SchoolCash Online https://hwdsb.schoolcashonline.com
