Welcome Back Rockton -Information for September 6th

Welcome back, everyone!

Hello Rockton families, my name is John Manzin and I am excited to be starting September as the new principal of Rockton School. I have been a school administrator in HWDSB for the past 15 years, serving schools from across Hamilton Wentworth including the Flamborough family of Schools. The staff have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming school year, our caretaking staff have done a fantastic job of cleaning the building and our educator teams have been in preparing for the September start. Mrs. Jeffrey and Mrs. Fogel in the office have been working hard to ensure for a safe and smooth start up. We look forward to a great year!

As you know, our first day of school is Wednesday, September 6th for all students EXCEPT for Kindergarten students.  On Wednesday, our Jr. Kindergarten students (and parents/guardians) have short meeting times with their teachers.  On Thursday, September 7th, all Kindergarten students will attend school.

Please find attached below a complete list of our staff and a copy of the Bell Times for this school year.

First Day Procedures

Parents are now able to check their child’s homeroom teacher in the Parent Portal.  Please login to find this information as it will help ease some anxiety for your child.  Please reassure children that we will have lots of staff on hand to help everyone find their teacher.  Buses arrive at approximately 9:00am to 9:15 am.  Teachers will be out on the playground locating their students as of 9:00am.  Attached is a map of the playground which will help children find their teachers:

We strongly encourage parents to have students ride the bus on the first day of school – even if the buses are delayed.  It is always a challenge to handle the large number of cars in the student drop off lane when buses are trying to get into the unloading zone.  Please log into the Transportation Portal to check your bus stop location and times.  Here is the link:  https://www.hamiltonschoolbus.ca/.  Once you know the route number of your bus, you can teach your child the animal name that goes with their bus (it is easier to remember).  Attached is the list of animal names that go with each route.  Note that some of our buses have different route numbers in the a.m. and the p.m., but the animal name remains the same, below is a list of the bus routes with Animal Names.

When students get off the bus they will walk around the Kindergarten pen and into the playground.  Kindergarten students can be escorted by their parents/guardians/siblings into the Kindergarten pen. The bell will ring at 9:15 and students will assemble and wait in their homeroom locations.  Teachers will escort students into their homerooms.

At the end of the day, please make sure that your child understands how they are to get home.  This is often a huge cause of anxiety for students (and Principals).  It is helpful if they learn the animal name of the bus they will ride home. (see list below)

Please email the school with any questions or concerns that you have.

Enjoy your long weekend!
