Remote/In-Person Transition for Elementary Students

October 2, 2020

Dear Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

As communicated earlier this week in the COVID-19 Family Update #26, the first transition date for switching between remote and in-person learning modes is November 3, 2020.  There will be two other transition points in the school year, January 2021 and March 2021, where a switch can be requested.

Parents and guardians may indicate their choice through Forms in the Parent Portal from Monday, October 5, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. to Monday, October 12, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. The form is called Elementary Transition Between Remote and In-Person (Optional Update Form).

The form provides two options:

  • I want to switch my child to remote learning for November 3
  • I want to switch my child to in-person school learning for November 3

Only those parents and guardians who want a change are to complete the form. If a form is not completed by the closing date, the student’s current learning mode status will remain.

Once the form is submitted, you will see a pop-up message that says “Thank you for completing the form.” This is confirmation that your choice has been registered. Your Parent Portal dashboard will also be updated indicating that the form was submitted.

Accessing the Parent Portal is the preferred method for indicating that you want a switch. Some parents/guardians, however, may need additional assistance.

  • Parents and guardians with a child currently attending in-person schools may contact their home school office for assistance during school hours between Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 9. School office staff will input your choice into HWDSB’s student information system if accessing the Parent Portal is a barrier.
  • Parents and guardians with a child currently attending the elementary school remote learning program may contact [email protected] or call 365-833-2033 to access support with the November 3 transition.

All families submitting a form for a switch will receive more information, such as teacher name and class assignments, before the transition date, Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

Thank you,

Manny Figueiredo

Director of Education
