More December 2023 Updates!

Staffing Update

I would like to share with great mixed emotions that I have accepted a principal position in the Grand Erie District School Board and will be starting at my new school on January 8th. Therefore, my last day will be Friday December 22nd. Details of the incoming principal will be shared before the winter break. This was a difficult decision for me to make as an employee of HWDSB since 2006 and a school administrator in this board for 9+ years. While I look forward to continuing my leadership journey in Grand Erie, I will miss the Helen Detwiler staff, students dearly and it has been an honour to serve this community.

School Updates

With the winter break fast approaching, we have many fun events happening at the school next week. Please see below for the details. Just a reminder that our winter break is December 25th – January 5th. Students first day back to school will be Monday January 8th. We wish our Helen Detwiler Families an enjoyable and restful winter holidays!

‘Just Give It’ Food Drive

We are in the middle of our annual food drive and are accepting non-perishable food items which we will be collecting up to and including Monday, December 18th. Class 56C is leading the food drive and giving back to our community. All donations will be picked up by one of our community partners, “Neighbour 2 Neighbour” who do such an amazing job of collecting and distributing food items in Hamilton. If you are able, please send any donations with your child in the next 2 weeks. Thank you in advance for your support!

School Spirit Week (Dec. 18th – 22nd)

During December 18th – 22nd, we will be having a school wide spirit week. Each day will be focused on showing school spirit in fun and different ways as we lead up to the winter holidays. Please click on the link for more details: HD Spirit Week

Joy Day (Dec. 21st)

Thursday December 21st will be Joy Day at Helen Detwiler! Classes will be participating in fun activities, games, crafts etc. throughout the day.

Special Event Day (Dec. 22nd)

Friday December 22nd is designated as a Special Event Day. Sweet Treats are welcome but we must be store bought have ingredients listed.

Middle School Winter Dance (Dec. 22nd)

Student Council is planning a Middle School winter dance for grades 6 – 8 students during Friday afternoon on December 22nd. They will be selling snacks and refreshments during the dance.

Photo Retake Day (Jan. 12th)

The school photographer will be in the building for photo retakes on Friday January 12th.
