School Spirit Wear Coming Soon!

We heard much feedback from staff and families about making school spirit wear available to students.  We are excited to announce that we will be offering school spirit wear with a new Helen Detwiler school logo! We worked closely with the school clothing provider, HWDSB Communications Department, design consultants as well as an approval process with our superintendent.  Stay tuned for more details, we will soon be launching our new Helen Detwiler Hurricanes logo which will be on our website, letterhead, athletic uniforms and future spirit wear!

Terry Fox Fundraising Update

Thank you to everyone who supported our 2023 Terry Fox Run and Fundraising Campaign. Our event was a huge success!  We had so much fun running/walking outside in the fresh air, and we beat our goal of $2135 by $1000! We thank everyone for their contributions to help raise funds for cancer research in honour of Terry Fox and his legacy.

Extra-Curricular Update

• We are very proud of our junior and senior cross country team that participated in this year’s cross country meet. A total of 55 junior students and 36 senior students represented our school at Christie Lake Conservation Area. We even had some of our students finish in the top 10 and top 20!
• Volleyball Season is in full swing at Helen Detwiler with our junior and senior girls team and our senior boys team. They are improving with each game played!
• Our student choir is meeting regularly during nutrition breaks and rehearsing songs for our upcoming Remembrance Day Ceremony.
• Student Council elections took place among our grade 7 and 8 students and we are proud to announce our co-presidents Nam & Rihanna! We’re sure our student council has many ideas planned to improve the student experience at Helen Detwiler.

Remembrance Day Ceremony – November 10, 2023 @ 11:15 a.m.

This year November 11th falls on a Saturday. Therefore, on November 10th, Helen Detwiler will be honouring the many brave people who stood up for their beliefs and sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Our upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on Friday November 10th at 11:15 a.m. in the gymnasium. Parents and caregivers are welcome to join the ceremony.

Progress Reports

On November 13th, progress reports and kindergarten initial observations will be sent home. These are designed to show your child’s development of the learning skills/ work habits and the Four Frames in kindergarten since the beginning of the school year, as well as their progress in the achievement of the curriculum expectations in the subjects indicated. Teachers have commented on your child’s demonstration of “strengths” and “next steps for growth and improvement”. This is an opportunity to sit with your child, celebrate their successes and reflect on next steps and goal setting.
