Principal/Vice-Principal Message

It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the 2021/22 school year! Although Mrs. Laws and I joined Helen Detwiler midway through the year, we enjoyed getting to know and building relationships with the staff, students, and the community. It has been a very challenging and unpredictable year but we want to thank you and let you know how appreciative the Helen Detwiler staff are of your efforts at home to support the learning and well-being of our students.

On behalf of the Helen Detwiler staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our departing staff members for their dedication to the school and community. We wish them all the best!

Term 2 Report Cards

With the conclusion of term two, report cards will be sent home on Monday, June 27th. We encourage you to reflect and discuss the report card with your child focusing on the key learnings, their strengths and next steps for improvement. This discussion is valuable in promoting ongoing learning and improvement. The signed third page can be returned before the last day of school for students which is Wednesday, June 29th.

Term 2 Report Cards – Remote Classes

Report cards for our grades 1, 6 and 8 remote classes will be delivered electronically on Monday, June 27th. Parents and guardians will receive an email with the link to access it. The password to view and download your child’s report card is their birthday, entered in the format MM/DD/YYYY. For example, if your child’s birthday is March 15, 2013, you would enter their birthdate as: 03/15/2013

Please be sure to include the slashes (/).

Your child’s report card will be available for download for only 7 days. After 7 days, the link will expire and you will no longer be able to access it. Please be sure to download and either save or print your child’s report card for your records.

Class Placements for 2022-23

Many factors are considered by our classroom educators and support staff when placing students in their classes for next year. To honour the integrity of the class building process, our students will be placed into their next grade class using a school team approach. While we do not take parental requests for specific class placements for their child, we listen and take input from parents and caregivers into consideration. Ultimately, class placements will be a school based decision. Thank you for respecting this process and trusting the Helen Detwiler staff with your child’s placement.

We recognize that communication about elementary class placement of students is very important to students and their families in anticipation of the upcoming school year. Many factors need to be considered when determining a student’s placement or schedule, and many changes can occur over the summer months. For this reason, we will continue last year’s practice of sharing information about students’ class placements the week before school begins (August 29, 2022) via the Parent Portal. Families having trouble accessing the parent portal, can call the school August 29th – Sept 2nd for support.
