The International Day of Persons with Disabilities takes place on December 3rd of each year. This is the first year that HWDSB will be recognizing this day with messages to schools and families. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was started by the United Nations in 1992 and is a day to help everyone become more understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and to recognize the benefits of including people with disabilities in everyday life.

Today we would like to highlight the importance of human diversity. Diversity is everything that makes people different from each other. This includes many things such as race, ethnicity, gender, religious belief, and ability. It is the understanding that everyone is unique and it is important to recognize, respect, accept, and celebrate our individual differences. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides us with an opportunity to learn more about human diversity and how our school and community can support the unique abilities that all of us have.
