Cold Weather Reminders

It is important for our students to get outside as often as possible for fresh air, free play and a break from their classroom activities.  It is important in our cold weather months that students come prepared to play outside frequently.  We encourage all students to come with warm coats, snowpants, winter boots, hats and mitts every day.  If your child is a particularly enthusiastic outdoor child, perhaps tucking an extra pair of mitts into his/her backpack for second recess may be helpful when the first set are soaking wet.

We do not have any supervision available inside during recesses when students go outside.  If your child is too sick to have those times of outdoor play, we would advise you that they are then too sick to participate in the school program, and would encourage you to keep him/her home.  All students will be sent outside for recess.

There may, however, be times when we have to keep students inside for indoor recesses.  The temperature threshold for that is -15 degrees and/or -20 degrees with the windchill.  Other times they may be kept in is if the weather is particularly inclement (e.g. thunderstorms, heavy wind).

A reminder that students are also outside in the morning, beginning at 8:40 a.m. playground supervision.  Unless the weather is inclement, all students are asked to wait out on the playground until entry time.  We again encourage students and parents to remember not to come to the playground until 8:40.

With cold weather, there may be times that HWDSB considers school closure for transportation safety purposes.  Please see the attached flyer for an explanation of that process and notification.

Stay warm and enjoy our Canadian winter!
