Important Message: Words do Matter

The following message was also sent through School Messenger on October 3, 2024:

This is an important message about our school community and the power of words.

Words do matter:

A vibrant culture is one where we can learn from each other. Our Indigenous partners have shared with us their Indigenous ways of knowing and being and one of the key parts of this is language and words. They teach us that words can hold power, resilience, and strength – and others can cause pain and powerlessness. Think about the difference between the words “colonize” and “decolonize”. One takes power away and the other gives power and resilience.

At school:

At school, we often talk about the words we use and their impact. We remind students that words have weight, and someone is always listening. Lately we’ve noticed students using language from TikTok, songs and other media. While these words may be normalised in pop culture, they can be harmful in everyday life. Students use these words with their peers without realising the hurt they cause. Sadly, many of these words are slurs against people based on race, gender or religion.

Actions Taken:

Recently, myself and teachers have taken the time to speak to each of our older student classes reminding them of how words do matter.  Students seem to have a clear understanding as to why a swear word should not be used, and they now understand why slurs or racist and derogatory terms like the N word are never acceptable.  They are guided by the following document: All roads lead to NO.pdf

Moving Forward:

Moving forward as a school, we will hold students accountable for the language they use. The graphic above is what we use with our students with respect why the N word cannot be used, and the same reasoning can be used for any slur.  The use of racist and derogatory words such as the N word are never acceptable and will result in progressive discipline which can include suspension.

Upholding Human Rights, Safety & Well-Being as a Community

The phrase “It takes a village” is very real in our Billy Green community. As educators we partner with you, our families to support the growth and development of our students. At school we will continue to talk about language. At home you can help by asking your child how words matter and how they can use language to inspire hope and strength in others. By working together as a community to create language that honours our differences without causing harm, we can help our children flourish in wellbeing and achievement.
