HWDSB Shows Improvement Towards Achievement

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the 2016-17 assessment results in the areas of Primary and Junior Reading, Writing and Mathematics, as well as the results of the Grade 9 Mathematics assessment and the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

“Our results have improved or remained consistent with previous years as we reach closer to the provincial average in four of the nine assessment areas administered by EQAO,” said Manny Figueiredo, Director of Education.

HWDSB is still focused on its long-term commitment of its Strategic Direction priorities in the area of student learning and achievement, which consists of three goals:

• All students reading by the end of Grade 1
• Improvements in Math
• All students graduating

Early reading is a key component of school success, for example. Starting in September, 2017, HWDSB has invested in 48 Reading Specialist teachers, who have a mandate to support K-1 educators with reading strategies and student-focused reading interventions.

HWDSB is entering its second year of implementing the Renewed Math Strategy, as part of its vision of students moving towards graduation. This commitment to a balanced math program will not only see students understand how to do math, but also what it means through real life examples.
