Bennetto students see playground revitalized
In coordination with City of Hamilton Councillor, Jason Farr (Ward 2) and No. 9, a not-for-profit based in Toronto focused on eco-literacy programming in elementary public schools, Bennetto Elementary School unveiled their new playground this September.
This project originated as part of the Imagining My Sustainable City (IMSC) program, through No. 9 in 2016. My Sustainable City saw Bennetto students and their teachers work with professional architectural educators to create a sustainable urban design and architectural project of their playground. Councillor Farr provided $150,000 from his Ward 2 Capital Reserves and HWDSB matched this amount to bring the playground from imagination to reality.
The new Bennetto playground includes:
Kindergarten Play Area
- Astroturf play area
- Revitalized benches
- Naturalized log features for imagination play
Playfield
- Outdoor classroom
- Celebration Tree follow the leader circle play
- 3-hoop play structure
- Long jump pit
- Armour stone and benches for gatherings as identified by students
- Ring Bench designed by a student
- Tree planting
- Creative butterfly and flower asphalt painted based on student design
- Gagaball pit
