As winter approaches, we want to remind all HWDSB families about how we make the decision to cancel school and board operations. This is often a difficult call to make, and is made with the safety and security of our students and staff in mind.
To mark Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, HWDSB is working to make schools safer with its new bullying resource and continuing support for the board-wide use of the innovative anti-bullying TipOff service.
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) French Immersion registration ends on Thursday, November 30, 2017, for parents looking to enrol their child in Grade 1.
HWDSB has introduced a new system-wide application process for entry into French Immersion, which starts in Grade 1. The application is available to all students within Hamilton and offers a guaranteed placement in the program, but not necessarily at their French Immersion in-catchment school.

Help is available on Tuesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at Eva Rothwell Centre (460 Wentworth St. North) and on Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys’ and Girls’ Club (45 Ellis Ave.)

On October 26, 2017, HWDSB staff held a public consultation meeting to provide community input regarding the recommendations for French Immersion boundaries and school locations for Lower Stoney Creek and East Hamilton.
To support ongoing community input, we are meeting with the Advisory Panel to review data from the public meeting and collaboratively identify key information to help Trustees to make an informed decision on December 18, 2017.

At HWDSB, we know that parent engagement fosters student success. We want to be as clear as possible about changes to how schools report on learning in Kindergarten.
In the past at HWDSB, family members could attend “observation visits” in Kindergarten. For the 2017-18 school year, we will be using the new, written Kindergarten report provided by the Ministry of Education.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the 2016-17 assessment results in the areas of Primary and Junior Reading, Writing and Mathematics, as well as the results of the Grade 9 Mathematics assessment and the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
HWDSB’s French as a Second Language (FASL) Advisory Committee is seeking members to advise Trustees on elementary and secondary French programming as well as Ministry of Education and community learning supports. Applications are due by Monday, September 25, 2017.
