Friday wear ORANGE

Orange Shirt Day is held every September 30th. It’s a day to honour Residential School survivors and for schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. As students around the country return to school, we recognize that the return to school for many Indigenous children throughout the history of what is now Canada meant a loss of self-esteem, language, culture and well-being. Teachers will make age-appropriate choices about how to address the meaning of Orange Shirt Day with their classes. We encourage all students to wear an Orange Shirt on —- (Friday, September 28th) to show their commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters.
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC.  It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.  For more information: https://www.orangeshirtday.org/
