Terry Fox Run – On Friday, September 26th, Winona will be participating in the annual Terry Fox run. Classes will be participating throughout the day, depending on Grade. Please send your child to school with comfortable clothes and footwear appropriate for outdoor activity.  Please consider donating to the Terry Fox Foundation. SCHOOL COUNCIL AGM

Please join us THIS THURSDAY at 6:00 PM in the library for our School Council Annual General Meeting (AGM).  Childminding is available during meetings for school age children. The purpose of the School Council is “through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”

THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL IS TO:

Advise the Principal and, where appropriate, the school board.
Place students’ interests first
Support school success planning goals
Encourage parent and community involvement
Promote positive attitudes towards public education

Last year, a dedicated group of Winona caregivers actively engaged with our school staff, offering valuable input and feedback on what matters most to Winona families. School Council members also planned and organized several events throughout the year and successfully fundraising for our school. Last year, funds raised through School Council initiatives supported the physical education and outdoor equipment, new athletic jerseys and classroom technology. We look forward to another great year and seeing you Thursday evening.

Bringing Items to School – We kindly ask that students not bring special items to school. While we understand how meaningful these belongings can be, items brought from home can be lost, stolen, or damaged during the school day. To help keep these treasures safe, it is best that they stay at home where they can be enjoyed without risk. This includes toys, collectibles, electronics, and any items with sentimental or monetary value. For students in Grades 5–8, lockers are available, and we encourage them to use a lock to help keep their belongings secure throughout the day.
Class Treats –  Did you know that all Ontario schools follow the Healthy Schools: Food and Beverage Policy? As part of this policy, schools are allowed up to 10 “special-event” days each year when food and beverage standards are relaxed. At Winona, these days will be used for school-wide and classroom celebrations throughout the year. Your child’s teacher will let you know when these special-event days are happening and will guide what is appropriate to bring. Because of this policy and to respect the allergy and dietary needs of our students, we kindly ask that birthday treats or food items for the whole class not be sent to school. If you’re ever unsure, please check with your child’s teacher for specific directions.
