DISCIPLINARY PROCESS

In teaching self-discipline and responsibility, we engage the students in a problem-solving process that examines their behaviour and explores alternatives resulting in more appropriate behaviour.

  • The classroom teacher will discuss the situation with the student and try to reach an understanding. An appropriate consequence may be given.
  • If the problem continues, a meeting will be held between the student and the principal, VP or designate with teacher input or presence.
  • Parents/guardians will be notified of ongoing problem behaviour. Further problem solving may involve school personnel such as a special education staff, social worker, public health nurse or other professional resource people such as the family physician or a child care worker.
  • The principal, VP or designate may withdraw a child from the classroom setting for part of the day. This withdrawal may constitute a time-out, or in more serious cases, an in-school suspension.  In the more serious situations, parents will be notified and invited to participate in the problem-solving process.
  • In extreme cases, students may be suspended or expelled from school. The student’s past behaviour will be considered and communication with parent(s) will occur.
  • Disciplinary action may be taken at any stage of the disciplinary process.

DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

Students who fail to live up to the “school’s expectations” and “pupil responsibilities” will be subjected to specific consequences and/or disciplinary actions.

These may include:

  • Written analysis of the situation including solution and future action (could be in the form of a Discipline Report or Problem Solving form) *
