Letter to Families

March 7, 2018

Dear Families,

At times, school communities have heightened concerns about what we term “stranger danger.” This can lead to increased reports of suspicious persons. We know there is heightened concern in our community this week.

Hamilton Police has released the following statement about the incident near our school:

On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, Hamilton Police responded to a suspicious incident that occurred after hours at Queen Mary School. Detectives have investigated and determined a curious child entered a stranger’s vehicle on his own accord. The child then exited the vehicle when called by his parent. The incident is deemed to be unfounded and has been confirmed by the parent.

We all want children to be safe, and families can reinforce safety. Ensure your children can identify if a person is a stranger. Remember it is impossible to tell if a stranger is a threat based on their appearance. Tell a parent or caregiver where you are. Stay with friends. Remember it is not a child’s role to help a stranger – let adults do this.

Thank you for sharing our concerns about safety.

Sincerely,

Kelly McCrory, Principal
