School Councils in HWDSB – An Overview

POW School Council Voting Ballot

POW School Council Nomination Form

Hello families,

We are so excited to begin the school year and welcome back our students. There are many ways you can get involved in a child’s education. Please consider joining our School Council and Home and/or Home and School Association, where we meet around once a month. We are now able to meet in person, so these meetings would occur during the school day (from 10:10 a.m. onwards), and they are never without treats! If you have any questions, please reach out and let us know.

School Council:

All parents/guardians of students of Prince of Wales are welcome and encouraged to attend School Council meetings.

The Ministry of Education requires all Ontario schools to have School Councils. The role of the School Council is to advise the principal and staff of recommendations for the School Improvement Plan and further the effective environment for students. If a parent/guardian would like to be a voting and serving member on the School Council, they must be elected to the role. Submission of a nomination form is required (see attached form).

We will hold our first School Council meeting for this school year on Monday, September 26th at 10:10 a.m. in the Nutrition Room at the school location.  At this time, we will review the number of candidates who have put their names forward to serve on the Council. If there is more than 1 name for each executive position, we will hold an election; the process will be reviewed at the meeting. Individuals putting their names forward must be attend this meeting.

During the meeting, a School Council Executive consisting of Chair, Co-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary will be determined. The school community will be notified of the new School Council.

Home and School:

Prince of Wales also has an active Home and School partnership, where parents, guardians and communuth members are willing and active partners to promote the welfare of children and youth. The Ontario Federation of Home and School Associations is committed to informed and proactive involvement in our homes, our schools and our communities, to obtain “The Best for Each Student”. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to join the Prince of Wales Home and School Association. This meeting will be held on the same day, right after the school council meeting.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

M. Panju, Principal, Prince of Wales

S. Huculiak, President, Home and School

J. Ziegler Howarth, Chair School Council
